Do Ahead of Time

Book & buy now β€” limited availability

A few days before you leave

The night before you fly / day of departure

During the trip β€” a day ahead of when you'll need it

Weather Plan β€” Checking In & Switching on a Dime

The one truly weather-locked piece of the whole trip is the Lutsen alpine slide Thursday at 2pm β€” it closes for any moisture on the track (rain, mist, or dense fog), not just heavy rain. Everything else on the itinerary tolerates a drizzle. Here's when to check, and what to do if the slide's a no-go.

When to check

Three levels of backup

Level 1 β€” small disruption Thursday: ride it out same-day

If it's just an off hour or two of drizzle/mist, no need to change days:

  • Ride the gondola anyway β€” it's enclosed, so light rain doesn't stop it, and the kids still get the mountaintop view and Summit Chalet.
  • Stretch Grandview Park and the winery β€” both already on the day's plan, and the winery has covered firepit seating and a food truck.
  • Head back to Bluefin a bit early for the indoor pool instead of losing the afternoon.

Level 2 β€” swap Wednesday and Thursday

If Wednesday night's forecast shows Thursday is a washout but Wednesday (or the Wednesday you haven't had yet β€” i.e. you check Tuesday night too) looks clear, just swap the two days: do Grand Marais + Lutsen on Wednesday, and push the Cascade River/Temperance River/on-property day to Thursday. Both days are self-contained, so the swap is clean. It just means moving three things:

  • Call Lutsen to shift the alpine slide/gondola tickets to the new date
  • Move the Bluefin Grille reservation to whichever evening is now "Wednesday" in the new order
  • Order World's Best Donuts for pickup on the new Grand Marais day instead

Level 3 β€” backup-backup: push the whole day to Friday

If neither Wednesday nor Thursday cooperate, move the entire Grand Marais + Lutsen day to Friday and use it as the drive-home day, rather than losing it:

  • Check out of Bluefin at 11am as planned
  • Drive north to Grand Marais (~30 min) for donuts, Artist's Point, and the harbor
  • Drive to Lutsen (~40 min) for the gondola + alpine slide
  • Continue straight home to Minneapolis from Lutsen β€” no need to double back to Bluefin

Trade-off: this means skipping Sugarloaf Cove and the Volcanic Rock Talk, and a longer, later drive home β€” but since Friday already has no rush to get back, that's an acceptable swap. Thursday itself becomes an open, unscheduled day at the resort (repeat whatever the kids liked best β€” pool, kayaking, agate hunting, playground).

What rain does not ruin

Everything else flexes fine in a drizzle with layers and a rain jacket: the Cascade River and Temperance River stops (Wed) are short paved/graveled walks, not exposed ridgelines; the Grand Marais and Sugarloaf Cove stops are brief; and agate hunting is genuinely better after rain, since wind and waves push fresh rock ashore.
S'mores in the rain: if the beach campfire is rained out on any night, the suite's own wood-burning fireplace is a built-in indoor backup β€” you already have the s'mores kit from guest services, and marshmallows over a suite fireplace works in a pinch.

Tuesday, Sept 1 β€” Drive Day + Arrival

Minneapolis β†’ Duluth β†’ Tofte Β· check-in 4:00 PM
8:30–9:00 AM β€” Leave Minneapolis.
Car game: set a timer for every hour on the road β€” whoever's turn it is picks a song and the car sings/dances along. Cheap, effective entertainment for a 5yo on a long drive.
~10:30 AM β€” Moose Lake leg stretch (~90 min in). Bathrooms, 20 min max.
~12:00 PM β€” Duluth, Canal Park. Lunch at Duluth Grill. Watch the Aerial Lift Bridge (check ship schedule at boatnerd.com before you leave signal). Playfront Park at Bayfront Festival Park. Budget 1–1.5 hrs, leave by 1:30pm.
1:30–3:15 PM β€” Drive Duluth β†’ Tofte via Hwy 61. NAP
Engineered nap: 2yo goes down leaving Duluth, sleeps the scenic stretch, wakes arriving in Tofte.
~3:15 PM β€” Tofte General Store (half mile before Bluefin). Drinks, snacks, paper plates, wine/treats for evenings. 15 min.
~3:45 PM β€” Call Coho CafΓ© from the car: (218) 663-8032. Order takeout.
4:00 PM β€” Check in βœ…. Grab s'mores kit from guest services. Sign up for Wednesday kayaking slot.
4:30 PM β€” Pick up Coho order, walk to Tofte Park (3 min from resort). Picnic tables, playground, Lake Superior ledgerock shoreline.
~5:00 PM β€” Optional 15-min agate scan on the Tofte Park shoreline while the kids finish eating/playing. AGATE #1
Low-stakes, low-effort first look β€” no pressure, just introduce the "wet the rock" trick (see Agate Guide tab) so the 5yo knows what to look for the rest of the week. Skip entirely if everyone's wiped from travel β€” there are three more chances.
5:45 PM β€” Back to resort, outdoor heated pool. ~30 min, lake views β€” keep it shorter than it wants to be, since the pool-to-campfire turnaround (drying off, changing two wet kids) eats time fast.
6:45 PM β€” πŸ”₯🎡 S'mores + Campfire Music with Joe Paulik at the beach campfire (6–9pm, just show up, kits in hand). All four of you.
7:15 PM β€” Kids to bed. Adults: fireplace + whirlpool + provisions from the General Store.

Wednesday, Sept 2 β€” Waterfalls + On-Property Day

Not on the itinerary: the resort's "Guided Hike at Oberg Mountain" (9–12). It's a 2.5–3 mile loop with a steep, uneven start/finish and real drop-offs β€” not appropriate with a 2yo along, even in a carrier.
Buy the day's state park permit: Cascade River and Temperance River are both Minnesota state parks β€” one $7 day permit (available at the Cascade River park office/self-pay station) covers both today. No need for the $35 annual pass since this is your only state-park day.
Cascade River β†’ Temperance River β†’ nap β†’ museum β†’ afternoon choice β†’ Bluefin Grille
8:00 AM β€” Breakfast at Coho CafΓ©. Go early, pastries go fast.
9:15 AM β€” Cascade River State Park (~15 min drive). Waterfall is 5–10 min walk from the lot β€” one of the shortest, most toddler-friendly falls-viewing walks on the whole shore. 2yo in carrier. 1–1.5 hrs.
10:45 AM β€” Temperance River pulloff, Schroeder (~10 min back toward Bluefin). Park after the Temperance River sign, walk to the bridge/viewing platform where the gorge meets the lake. Blogs note this spot is more about the dramatic gorge view than a strenuous hike β€” good match for tired legs. 20 min, free.
11:30 AM β€” Back at resort. NAP WINDOW
2yo down in the room, one adult stays. Other adult takes the 5yo to the indoor pool. Target 1.5 hrs.
1:15 PM β€” Everyone up. Lunch at Coho (eat in or takeout).
2:15 PM β€” North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum, next door. 1905 Twin Fish House replica. 45 min, free, great for a curious 5yo.
3:15 PM β€” Afternoon choice:
Option A: Complimentary kayaking (5yo tandem w/ adult; 2yo lasts ~20 min)
Option B: Indoor pool β€” hot tub + sauna for adults
Option C ⭐ recommended pairing: Resort grounds lakewalk + playground + agate hunting on Bluefin's own ledgerock shoreline AGATE #2 β€” this is the most relaxed, unhurried agate window of the whole trip since there's no drive and no clock. Bring the mesh bags and spray bottle.
5:30 PM β€” Dinner at Bluefin Grille ⭐ (reservation required β€” call ahead, mention early bedtime, ask for a window table).
Fallback if only a later table is available: eat at Coho CafΓ© or order Bluefin Grille takeout instead, so the 7:15 bedtime doesn't slip. Save the sit-down Grille dinner for a night the timing actually holds.
6:45 PM β€” πŸ”₯ S'mores at the beach campfire. Quick β€” 15–20 min.
7:15 PM β€” Kids to bed. Adults: fireplace + whirlpool.

Thursday, Sept 3 β€” Grand Marais + Lutsen Day

Grand Marais morning β†’ nap hold at Grandview Park β†’ Lutsen gondola/slide β†’ winery β†’ home
7:30 AM β€” Early breakfast at Coho. Pack layers and snacks for the day.
8:45 AM β€” Drive to Grand Marais (~30 min).
9:15 AM β€” 🍩 World's Best Donuts (pre-ordered). Eat walking to the harbor.
9:30 AM β€” Artist's Point β€” walk the rocky point to the lighthouse. Flat, short, dramatic. Great photos.
10:15 AM β€” Harbor + downtown Grand Marais. Walk the harbor beach, skip rocks, spot seagulls β€” and hunt agates on the pebble beach right here. AGATE #3
Blog tip (North Shore Explorer): this is one of the better casual agate/rock-skipping beaches on the shore β€” stroller-friendly, no hiking required. Browse shops after: The Big Lake Life, Picnic & Pine, Upstate MN.
~11:00 AM β€” 🍦 Superior Creamery & Confections.
Small-batch ice cream, kids reportedly go wild for the bubblegum flavor. Quick stop on the way to lunch, or fold into harbor time.
11:15 AM β€” Lunch at Voyageur Brewing Company ⭐ β€” family-friendly, rooftop deck, kid games, non-alcoholic options. Sliders, tacos, flatbread, cheese curds. No reservation needed.
12:30 PM β€” Leave Grand Marais heading south. NAP
Engineered nap: 2yo down in the car immediately on departure.
~12:55 PM β€” Grandview Park, Lutsen (4944 Grandview Loop). One adult stays in the car with the sleeping 2yo; other takes the 5yo to the park β€” huge lawn, playground, sand volleyball, picnic tables. Pack a snack. 45–60 min.
~1:50 PM β€” Wake 2yo. Drive 5 min to Lutsen Mountains.
2:00 PM β€” Lutsen Mountains: Gondola + Alpine Slide ⭐⭐
All four ride the gondola together first (no age limit, enclosed, 1,000ft above the lake, Summit Chalet at top). Then split: one adult + 5yo on the alpine slide (rides in lap, free for ages 2–5); other adult + 2yo at the Chalet/base β€” under 2 is not allowed on the slide. Pre-purchase tickets + waiver at lutsen.com. Slide closes if the track is wet β€” call (218) 663-7281 if weather's questionable; backup is gondola-only β†’ winery. Round trip is 7–15 min β€” expect to do it twice.
3:30 PM β€” North Shore Winery / Sawtooth Mountain Cidery (~10 min). Outdoor firepit seating, food truck, live music Thursday evenings. Tasting flight + cheese and crackers for the adults; kids roam the outdoor space.
5:15 PM β€” Back to Bluefin (~10 min).
5:45 PM β€” Dinner at Coho CafΓ© (or Bluefin Grille if you swapped from Wednesday).
6:45 PM β€” πŸ”₯ S'mores at the beach campfire. Night three.
7:15 PM β€” Kids to bed.

Friday, Sept 4 β€” Last Resort Morning, Check Out by 11am

Since there's no rush to get back to Minneapolis, Friday morning is maximized for resort/play time instead of an early off-property stop β€” Sugarloaf Cove moves to right after checkout, since it's ~10 min south on Hwy 61 and already on the way home.
Resort morning (pool, playground, rock talk) β†’ check out β†’ Sugarloaf Cove on the way out β†’ drive home
7:30 AM β€” Relaxed breakfast at Coho CafΓ©. Last pastries.
8:00–9:30 AM β€” Last resort morning: pool (indoor or outdoor, whichever the kids haven't had enough of), playground, arcade/game room. No packing pressure yet.
9:45–10:45 AM β€” Volcanic Rock Talk, Tofte Room (no signup needed) β€” folds right into the last resort morning, good pairing for a geology-curious 5yo.
10:45 AM β€” Back to the room, finish packing, load the car. Only 15 min before checkout β€” load the car before the rock talk if possible so this is just carry-ons and a room sweep.
11:00 AM β€” Check out βœ…
11:15–12:00 PM β€” Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center, Schroeder (~10 min south, on the way home). AGATE #4 ⭐ best spot
Touch animal pelts, interactive exhibits, then the 1.3-mile loop down to the rocky Lake Superior shoreline β€” widely cited across the blogs as one of the best wading/rock-collecting beaches for toddlers on this stretch of shore. Last and arguably best agate window of the trip β€” send them off with full pouches. $5 parking. 45 min.
~12:00 PM β€” Back on the road. NAP
2yo goes down shortly after leaving Sugarloaf Cove β€” landing right in the normal nap window instead of being engineered early.
~1:30 PM β€” Optional Duluth stop for lunch + stretch, once the 2yo is up.
~4:30–5:00 PM β€” Home to Minneapolis. No need to rush β€” a later arrival is fine.

πŸ”Ž DIY Agate Hunting Guide

Minnesota's state gemstone since 1969, Lake Superior agates show up on nearly every rocky beach on the North Shore. This is a fully self-guided activity β€” no reservation, no resort dependency β€” with a window built into four different days of the itinerary, to do whenever the moment allows.

How to spot one (5yo version)

Teach the 5yo this one rule: "if it's dry, wet it." Agates look like ordinary gray rocks when dry, but the second water hits them they glow. Look for:
  • Stripes β€” bands of red, orange, tan, or yellow, like a tiny target or a slice of a rock candy
  • Shiny and smooth β€” waxy, almost like it's been polished, even though nobody polished it
  • See-through-ish β€” hold it up to the sun; a real agate glows a little at the edges
  • Small β€” most are between an almond and a walnut in size
Game for the car ride there: "we're looking for a candy-striped rock that glows when it's wet." Give the magnifying glass to the 5yo as the "official inspector."

Best technique

Best spots on your itinerary

1. Sugarloaf Cove shoreline (Friday, after checkout) β€” best overall

Rocky, wave-sorted shoreline at the end of the 1.3-mile loop trail; multiple family blogs single this out as a top toddler wading/rock beach. Unhurried, on your way home, no extra driving.

2. Bluefin Bay's own ledgerock shoreline (Wednesday afternoon) β€” most relaxed

Zero drive time, zero schedule pressure β€” the best window to actually sit and dig rather than squeeze it between other stops.

3. Grand Marais harbor beach (Thursday, 10:15am) β€” most scenic

Pebble beach right downtown, flat and stroller-friendly; good for a quick 10–15 minute hunt woven into the rock-skipping you're already doing at the harbor.

Bonus for a future trip: Iona's Beach and Black Beach (near Two Harbors/Silver Bay) both come up repeatedly in blog research as excellent, less-crowded agate/rock beaches β€” Black Beach has unique black pebbles, Iona's has "singing rocks." Neither is on this itinerary since they'd add a detour on an already tight drive day, but worth knowing about if you pass through again.

Buy-before-you-fly kit list

Mesh drawstring bags (2)

One per kid for collecting β€” search "small mesh drawstring pouches" on Amazon. A few dollars each; also doubles as a beach-toy bag.

Kid-sized garden hand rake/cultivator

For moving rocks aside without bending over constantly β€” search "children's garden hand rake tool."

Small spray bottle

Fill with water once you're there (don't fly with liquid) β€” a 4–8oz spray bottle for "wetting" rocks in place.

Magnifying glass

The 5yo will love being the "official inspector" β€” a durable kid's magnifier, not glass/breakable.

Field guide (optional)

Lake Superior Rocks and Minerals by Bob Lynch & Dan R. Lynch β€” the standard pocket reference, good for the ride or for evenings identifying the day's finds.

Small trowel (optional)

For digging a few inches into wet rock layers at Sugarloaf Cove or Bluefin's shoreline.

Notes & Considerations

Oberg Mountain guided hike (Wed 9–12) β€” not on the itinerary. Described across sources as a 2.5–3 mile loop with a steep, uneven start/finish and real drop-offs. Not appropriate with a 2yo, even carried.
The resort's scheduled Agate Adventure (Tue 9:45–10:45am) is also not on the itinerary β€” it conflicts with your 4pm check-in. No need to call ahead about it; the itinerary's self-guided agate windows on four other days are more flexible anyway.
Buy a $7 Minnesota state park day permit on Wednesday before/at Cascade River State Park β€” it covers both Cascade River and Temperance River State Park the same day. Not needed on Friday since Sugarloaf Cove is a Scientific & Natural Area with its own separate $5 parking fee, not a state park.
Cell service is spotty north of Duluth. Download offline Google Maps for the Duluth–Grand Marais corridor before you lose signal, in addition to the boatnerd.com ship-tracker download.
Left off the itinerary on purpose: North Shore Adventure Park (Pincushion Mountain, near Grand Marais) β€” most courses are age 7+ and even the dedicated younger-kids area is 3–6, so the 2yo can't really participate and it would crowd an already full Thursday. Worth considering on a future trip when both kids are older.
